🇸🇪 Sweden 5-2 Finland 🇫🇮
World Championship Gold Medal Game
Sportovní Hala, Prague 🇨🇿
Sunday, 10 May 1992

Sweden, which barely made the final round, won its second straight World hockey Championship yesterday with a 5-2 victory over Finland.

Sweden is tied with Czechoslovakia with six titles on the all-time list. The Soviet Union tops the list with 22 wins. Canada is second with 19.

Peter Forsberg, Roger Hansson, Lars Karlsson and Arto Blomsten, four of 16 rookies on the young Swedish team, scored along with Mikael Andersson, a late roster addition from the Hartford Whalers.

The Swedes had to tie the United States 4-4 just to clinch the fourth and final quarterfinal spot from Pool A. Then they won 2-0 over Russia, which won the Olympic Gold medal as the Unified Team in February, before knocking out Switzerland 4-1 in the semifinals.

Forsberg, an 18-year-old junior drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers last year, scored his fourth goal of the tournament on a wraparound at 10:35 in the opening period to give Sweden a 1-0 lead, with Timo Peltomaa serving a penalty.

In the second period, Hansson, left unchecked, took a perfect pass from Anders Huss and skated in to make it 2-0 at 9:14. Just 1:51 later, Karlsson swept a backhand past goalie Markus Ketterer off a rebound.

Timo Peltomaa and Timo Jutila pulled two goals back for Finland late in the third period to spoil Swedish goalie Tommy Söderström’s shutout bid.

Head coach Pentti Matikainen pulled Ketterer in the last two minutes for an extra attacker, but Blomsten iced the game with an empty net goal at 19:04.

Earlier, Czechoslovakia overcame a second period rally by Siwtzerland to win the Bronze medal game, also 5-2.

Switzerland lost, but it was the finest achievement by a Swiss team in the World Championships since 1953, when it won a Bronze medal behind Sweden and Germany.

In that tournament the Soviet Union, Canada and the U.S. did not participate, and Czechoslovakia was forced to return home midway through the tournament because of the death of the country’s president.
