🇨🇿 Czechia 1-0 Russia 🇷🇺 (SO)
World Junior Championship Gold Medal Game
Skellefteå Kraft Arena, Skellefteå 🇸🇪
Tuesday, 04 January 2000

The Czech Republic won the World Junior Hockey Championship for the first time ever with a 1-0 shootout win over defending champion Russia yesterday.

It was the first medal at the World Juniors of any colour for the Czechs, who had won five Silver and five Bronze medals as Czechoslovakia from 1977-93. The Czechs finished ninth in Winnipeg last January when Slovakia grabbed its first-ever medal, a Bronze.

After no scoring in regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, the Czechs outscored Russia 2-1 in the shootout with goals from Milan Kraft, who plays for the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders, and Libor Pivko.

But it was goaltender Zdeněk Šmíd who was the hero for the Czech Republic, stopping four of five shots in the shootout and 34 shots in the game.

“I’m pretty excited,” Kraft said. “I have to take my jersey and medal and show it to the people in Prince Albert.”
