The U.S. used goals from five different players on the way to a 5-2 victory over Germany here tonight in a pre-tournament game in preparation for the upcoming 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.
“I thought it was a very competitive game and gave us a good chance to see some different players,” said Mark Osiecki, head coach of the 2015 U.S National Junior Team. “We’ve enjoyed our time in Kingston so far and look forward to Tuesday’s game with Sweden.”
J.T. Compher raced down the left wing, cut to the net and slipped the puck past German netminder Ilya Sharipov at 14:45 of the first period for the game’s opening goal. Then, with just 56 seconds left in the frame, Tyler Motte converted a nice centering pass from Hudson Fasching from the top of the crease to make it 2-0 for the U.S. after 20 minutes.
The U.S. doubled its advantage with a pair of second period goals. Jeremy Bracco got loose up the right side and fed Miles Wood who scored from point blank range at 8:07. Just 1:22 later, Zach Werenski made moves around two German defenders and fired the puck into the upper corner of the net from the right circle for a 4-0 lead.
Germany closed the gap to 4-2 with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, however, following a neutral-zone faceoff win by Compher, Ryan Collins banked the puck up the right boards, and Anthony Louis picked it up and flipped a backhand shot into the top corner of the net with 2:16 left to account for the 5-2 final.
Thatcher Demko played the first half of the game in goal for the U.S. and stopped all 14 shots he faced. Alex Nedeljkovic made six saves on eight shots in the second half of play.
NOTES: A total of 12 different players recorded at least one point in tonight’s game…Jack Eichel, Sonny Milano, Steven Santini, Alex Tuch and Brandon Halverson did not dress for the U.S. tonight.
