Starting with France being the first to release their roster on 23 December, and to be capped by the host Italians releasing their roster at a later date, the final roster selections for nine of the ten Olympic women’s hockey teams are now complete.
The full rosters comprise of 230 players that spread eleven leagues in ten different countries, with active PWHL players making up over under a quarter (60) of the total rosters, featuring on every team except for Italy, Japan and France. Each PWHL club has multiple Olympians on their roster, with the most coming from the Boston Fleet, Montréal Victoire and Ottawa Charge, each sending nine players to Milan.
The other leagues featured most prominently include Sweden’s Svenska damhockeyligan (39 players), the American collegiate system, the NCAA (38 players) and Switzerland’ Women’s League (28 players).
There are 90 returning players from seven returning teams at the 2022 Beijing Games, tournament MVP Brianne Jenner, top scorer Sarah Nurse, and tournament all-stars Marie-Philip Poulin and Claire Thompson (Canada), Jenni Hiirikoski (Finland) and Klára Peslarová (Czechia) all returning. The most returnees are from 2022 Gold and Bronze medallists Canada and Finland, respectively, each with sixteen returning players, with Switzerland close behind at fifteen returning players. Poulin, Hiirikoski and U.S. captain Hilary Knight, all playing in their fifth Games, will look to tie Jayna Hefford and Hayley Wickenheiser with the most women’s hockey medals (five), with Poulin and Knight almost certain to face off for Gold in their fifth and final Olympic final matchup.
