Denmark capped a come-from-behind victory with a perfect shootout to defeat Norway at the Polessye Cup, to win their first ever International Hockey Lineal Championship.
While Denmark was able to pick up the momentum early on a power play goal from Lasse Holgaard five minutes into the first, the game was fairly evenly matched through the first, with each team netting six shots. But it was the second where Norway came alive, outshooting the Lions 16-6 and tying the game on a Peter Lorentzen tally. Anders Bastiansen beat Danish keeper Simon Nielsen to go ahead 2-1 early in the third, but a furious offensive output from the Danes led to the tying goal from Mads Bødker to send the game to overtime.
The extra period solved nothing, so with the shootout at hand, Nielsen continued his spectacular play, only conceding a goal to Bastiansen. Norwegian goalie Ruben Smith, however, had a tougher time, giving up all 3 goals to Lasse Lassen, Lasse Holgaard and Julian Jakobsen to ensure the Danes took the victory in the shootout.
With the win, Denmark captures its first ever International Hockey Lineal Championship in history, becoming the 22nd nation (and first since Hungary in 2007) to capture the IHLC. Denmark, who played their first IHLC game against Slovakia in 1994, defeats a Norwegian squad that brought the IHLC to Gomel from the World Championships, and defended against Slovenia before dropping the title, in the first ever IHLC matchup between the bordering nations. Denmark will have its first ever IHLC defense tomorrow against Slovenia.
