Twelve Nations Tournament

Saturday, 27 August 2011

Monique Lamoureux-Kolls, Jocelyne Lamoureux and Kelli Stack each posted three points as the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Switzerland, 11-1, in its third game of the International Ice Hockey Federation Twelve Nations Invitational Tournament Series. With the win, the U.S. improved to 3-0 in the tournament.

“We had a young line-up tonight,” said Katey Stone, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women’s National Team. “It was fun to watch all of those kids share the puck and create a lot of offence. It was one of those games where we were able to work on a lot of different things, which was good for us.”

Lamoureux-Kolls opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally at 4:47 in the first period. Switzerland recorded its lone goal of the game less than a minute later on the power play. But the U.S. reclaimed the lead six seconds later, as Meghan Duggan lit the lamp at 5:28.

Hilary Knight scored back-to-back goals at 5:55 and 6:12 of the first period, with her second tally coming on the power play. Amanda Kessel followed suit with a power-play marker at 8:01 and Duggan struck for her second goal of the night en route to earning U.S. Player of the Game honours. Lamoureux-Kolls recorded her second goal of the game at 15:32 to give the U.S. a 7-1 lead. With 42 seconds remaining in the first period, Brianna Decker notched a power-play goal to put the U.S. ahead 8-1 at the end of the opening frame.

The U.S. held a 10-1 lead at the second intermission thanks to goals from Jen Schoullis and Lamoureux in the middle frame. Stack scored the lone goal in the third period at 12:22 to secure the U.S. victory.

U.S. netminder Jessie Vetter made 11 saves in the win.

The U.S. Women’s National Team next plays Canada Sunday, 28 August in its fourth of six games at Vierumäki Arena.
