Sunday, November 4, 2012

Canada retained the International Hockey Lineal Championship it won in the World Championships Gold Medal Game in their first successful defence, an 8-1 defeat of Finland in a pre-Four Nations Cup exhibition game in Helsinki.

Led by a two goal performance from Marie-Philip Poulin, Canada also got goals from Meaghan Mikkelson, Vicki Bendus, Jennifer Wakefield, Caroline Ouellette, Jayna Hefford and Haley Irwin, which included two power play goals and a shorthanded tally from Bendus. Susanna Tapani scored Finland’s lone goal, a second period goal that ruined Charline Labonté’s shutout attempt. Labonté stopped 11 of 12 shots, while Meeri Räisänen stopped 41 of 49 shots.

The win comes during Canada’s ongoing 27th IHLC reign, which they have held since April. This was the first meeting between Canada and Finland for the IHLC since the Twelve Nations Tournament in August 2011, where Canada narrowly defeated the Naisleijonat 3-2 to retain the IHLC. Canada faces Finland in their next game to open the Four Nations Cup on November 6 in Kerava.
