According to a report by Hokej.cz, details regarding the next iteration of the World Cup Of Hockey in 2016 were released at the annual IIHF Congress in Tenerife, Spain, with dates being confirmed for the tournament rumoured to be hosted in Toronto.
Although the IIHF or NHL have yet to officially confirm the tournament, the report states that the dates have been confirmed as having the event taking place from 15 September – 1 October 2016, and featuring an initial six teams (Canada, United States, Russia, Czechia, Sweden and Finland), with another two spots to be determined closer to the tournament.
The report also states that the formal announcement should come within the next month in Toronto, at which point the speculation can begin – can Canada put forth another brilliant squad that let them go undefeated not only at the Sochi Olympics but at the last World Cup in 2004? Will the Americans act as spoilers on Canadian ice again like they did in 1996? And who will get the final two spots in a more competitive hockey landscape than ever before – assumed teams like Slovakia and Switzerland, or perhaps dark horses like Norway or Latvia, if the spots are to be determined in a qualification round? We will keep on top of the story as updates become available in the coming months!
