NHL Releases Roster Projections For 2016 World Cup

wch2016-conference
The NHL, who will be restarting the World Cup Of Hockey after a twelve-year absence, has unveiled the last of its projected lineups for the six national and two pan-national teams partaking next September in Toronto, speculating on who will wear their nation’s colours for the first best-on-best global tournament since the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

While the vast majority of players listed are from the National Hockey League, as was expected (thus the reasoning for the “Team Europe” and “North American Youngstars” squads, to allow for as many NHLers as possible), surprisingly the projected rosters do account for selected Kontinental Hockey League players, in particular the Russian squad, with six skaters from the KHL accounted for. While the final decision for rosters does come up to the respective national bodies for each country, the NHL will surely put on the pressure to ensure as many of their players as possible are showcased.

Preliminary rosters are due to the NHL by 1 March 2016, with the complete final rosters to be announced on 1 June 2016. The projected lineups for the six national teams (UPDATE: plus the two non-national squads) at the 2016 World Cup Of Hockey, with their current team noted in parentheses (with KHL players marked with an asterisk), are as follows:

While a lot can certainly change in a year, it is exciting to begin to consider who will take to the ice for their countries – which players are virtual locks, which players will step in for injured or potentially retired players, and which emerging stars could showcase their talents in the 2015-16 season and take a valuable roster spot. Only time will tell but the countdown is on!
