The National Hockey League completed its awards distribution for the 2022-23 season with the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals, with nine IHLC holders representing four countries taking home trophies handed out over the past two weeks.
McDavid, who shredded his way through the league en route to 64 goals and 153 points, finishing 25 points ahead of the next closest scorer, teammate Leon Draisaitl, was awarded both the Hart Trophy as League MVP and Ted Lindsay Award as MVP voted by his peers, to go along with his goal (Richard) and points (Art Ross) trophies, marking the third Hart, fourth Lindsay, fifth Art Ross and first Rocket for McDavid.
The victories mark just the seventh time in NHL history where a player has captured four awards in a single season, following the likes of legends Bobby Orr (1970), Guy Lafleur (1977), Wayne Gretzky (1985), Mario Lemieux (1993), Alexander Ovechkin (2008) and Carey Price (2015); only Ovechkin has captured the Hart, Lindsay, Art Ross and Richard in a season prior to McDavid.
Only three other players repeated as winners from the event in Nashville, with Erik Karlsson winning his third Norris Trophy as top defender, Anลพe Kopitar winning his second Lady Byng Trophy as Most Gentlemanly Player, and Patrice Bergeron capturing his record sixth Selke Trophy as the best defensive forward. Steven Stamkos, solely named by Mark Messier as the winner of his Leadership Award, won his first non-scoring award after capturing the Rocket Richard Trophy on two occasions.
The other seven winners marked the first individual trophies of any kind in the NHL, with Linus Ullmark capturing both the Vezina and Jennings Trophy, the latter which he shared with teammate Jeremy Swayman; their head coach, Jim Montgomery, capturing the Jack Adams Award; Matthew Beniers captured the Calder Trophy as Top Rookie; Kris Letang captured the Masterton Trophy; Mikael Backlund captured the King Clancy Trophy; and Jonathan Marchesseault, capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy two weeks ago as Playoff MVP.
