IHLC 2023 In Review – Junior

The story of the world junior calendar year of 2023 came down really to two countries, with Canada dominating the top of the calendar, while it was American dominance nearly a full calendar year later setting the stage for a thrilling finish to the 2024 World Junior Championship.

Canada, by virtue of defeating Sweden on New Year’s Eve 2022, brought the IHLC into the medal rounds as the calendar turned to January 2023, narrowly escaping Slovakia in overtime in the Quarterfinals before easily defeating Team USA in the Semis, setting up a Gold Medal matchup with the upstart Czechs in Halifax.

After entering the third period with a 2-0 lead, Canada gave up a pair of Czech goals in just 54 seconds to suddenly turn the game into a tie, forcing sudden death overtime. After a wild series of opportunities, it was Dylan Guenther who defeated Czech keeper TomΓ‘Ε‘ SuchΓ‘nek to capture Canada’s twentieth World Junior title, with 17-year-old Connor Bedard’s 23 point performance earning him the inaugural IIHF Male Player Of The Year Award in June.

Canada failed, however, to bring the title into the 2024 tournament, falling to Team USA in their final pre-tournament tuneup in Kungsbacka, Sweden, meaning the IHLC went into Group B. Heavy favourites to top the group, the Americans dispatched of Norway and Switzerland in short order, narrowly then beating the Czechs in a shotoout, before the first-place game against undefeated Slovakia on New Year’s Eve. However, the Slovaks proved no challenge to the U.S., who throttled Slovakia 10-2 to finish a perfect 4-0 and clinch the top spot in the group round.
