The 2024 international junior calendar saw the United States dominate throughout the year, capturing Gold in early January 2024 and looking to repeat as world champions again, for the first time ever, in 2025.

Team USA, who was perfect in the group round throughout December 2023, brought the IHLC to the medal rounds, dispatching Latvia and Finland in the quarters and semis, respectively, facing off against hosts Sweden in the Gold Medal Game, with Tre Kronor looking for their first title since 2012. However, it was the Americans playing spoiler in Gothenburg, with five goal scorers posting six on the hosts to win their sixth world title with a resounding 6-2 win.

The U.S. carried the title to home turf when it hosted the World Junior Summer Showcase in Plymouth, Michigan, dropping the title to Finland in their first tilt on 31 July. However, the Leijonat would in turn lose to Canada, who would then in turn lose to Team USA in a shootout in the tournament finale, meaning the Americans would once again carry the IHLC into the World Juniors, this time being hosted in Ottawa.

The Americans, heavy favourites to win the tournament in 2025, easily defeating Germany and Latvia in the group round, but fell to Finland in a 4-3 overtime decision on 29 December, their first group round loss since 2022. The Finns then shut out Latvia in their group round finale on New Year’s Eve, to guarantee they will carry the title into 2025.

Finland will now begin the new year with the IHLC in hand, starting the medal round on 02 January against Slovakia, looking to win their first World Junior Championship since 2019, also captured on Canadian soil in Vancouver, British Columbia.
