The 2025 international junior calendar saw the United States capture their first back-to-back world title in 2025, followed by the emergence of Sweden dominating across three tournaments, capping the calendar year off with a commanding performance at the 2026 World Junior Championship.

Finland entered the medal rounds of the 2025 World Juniors with the IHLC, by virtue of their overtime victory over the defending champion United States, on 29 December, first knocking off Slovakia in the quarterfinals before Benjamin Rautiainen eliminated Sweden in overtime to send the Finns to the Gold Medal Game. The Americans, however, would exact overtime revenge on the Leijonat, this time with Teddy Stiga notching the golden goal to give Team USA their own 4-3 overtime victory, giving the Americans their seventh World Junior title and first back-to-back championship.

Team USA would again bring home the IHLC to home ice for the World Junior Summer Showcase, this time hosted in Minneapolis, Minnesota, hosts of the 2026 World Juniors. The Americans would drop their opening tilt to Sweden, who would upend Canada before dropping the IHLC to Finland on the final day of competition, ensuring that the title would return to Europe to be part of the Five Nations Cup, the first non-World Juniors action in Europe since 2022.

Finland would drop the IHLC to Switzerland at the opening of the August phase in Chomutov, Czechia, who would in turn lose to Sweden, winning two straight before the hosts upended the Juniorkronorna 7-4. With the tournament moving to Piešťany, Slovakia in November, the Czechs would win three straight over Finland, Switzerland and Slovakia by a combined score of 15-5, before dropping the finale to Sweden on 09 November.

Sweden would carry the title into the group round, easily dispatching Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany to set up a New Year’s Eve showdown with the hosts with top of the group on the line. The Juniorkronorna made easy work of the Americans in front of a stunned Saint Paul crowd, handing Team USA their first group loss since 2023 to lock up top spot in Group A.
