The Kontinental Hockey League formally wrapped their eighteenth season tonight in Moscow with their annual Closing Ceremony, awarding the league’s top teams, players and executives for their performance this year, with six former IHLC winners taking home trophies.
The big winner of the evening was Avangard defender Damir Sharipzyanov, who became the first defender to win the Golden Stick as League MVP, following his 67 points in 66 games from Omsk’s back-end, also taking home Top Scoring Defender honours, and being named to the league All-Star Team. Sam Anas of Dinamo Minsk was the other multi-award winner, capturing the scoring title, top line and league All-Star Team honours after a 32 goal, 89 point season.
League champions Lokomotiv Yaroslavl took home the most individual for one team with four, with Danil Isayev (Playoff MVP), Yuri Yakovlev (Top Director), Maxim Beryozkin (Overtime Hero) and Martin Gernát (Best Plus/Minus) taking home trophies, while Isayev and Alexander Radulov were named to the All-Star Team together. The rest of the evening had awards split amongst six other clubs, three awards going to Avangard and two to Dinamo. Veteran Sergei Shirokov, winner of the Gimayev Prize, took the on-stge opportunity to announce his retirement from the game at age 40, following his sixteen year KHL career.
Due to Russia‘s continued invasion of Ukraine, and subsequent ban (along with Belarus) from international competition and exodus of most non-Russian or Belarusian teams and players, the only non-Russian or Belarusian trophy winners were Americans Anas, Alex Limoges (Best Troika) and Mitchell Miller (KHL All-Star Team), along with Gernát of Slovakia.
