Swedish defender John Klingberg, a two-way weapon whose career was hampered by nagging injury problems, today confirmed his retirement from hockey at the age of 34, after a dozen-year NHL career, along with two World Championship and a World Junior title to his name.

Coming up in the junior system of his hometown Gothenburg’s Frölunda, Klingberg joined the senior club in 2011, before being loaned to both Jokerit of the SM-Liiga and Skellefteå, winning the Elitserien with the latter in 2013. After spending 2013-14 with Frölunda, he made the jump to North America full-time to join the Dallas Stars, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft, earning All-Rookie team honours in his first season. Klingberg would spend eight seasons in Dallas, being named an NHL All-Star in 2018, before signing with Anaheim as a free agent in 2022. However, recurring injury troubles would plague Klingberg as soon as he left the Stars, playing in only 148 games over four seasons between five clubs. Following his retirement, Klingberg leaves his pro career with 443 points in 700 career games in 12 NHL seasons, along with another 43 points in six playoff seasons.

Klingberg first joined the national team with the Juniorkronorna in 2011, capturing Gold at the 2012 World Juniors in Calgary, only Sweden’s second World Junior title and first since 1981. Klingberg would return for the 2013 World Juniors, making his senior team debut the following season on the Euro Hockey Tour; he would participate in four tours, winning the 2014-15 edition. He would make his World Championship debut in 2015, his first of four (2015, 2017-19), where he would capture consecutive Gold medals in 2017 and 2018, winning tournament honours as best defender at the latter.

Klingberg would capture the IHLC seven times over the course of his career, winning his first on the Euro Hockey Tour in 2010, with his last coming nearly a decade later in the World Championship Semifinal in 2018.
