The opening game of the Playoff Round at Winnipeg’s MTS Centre on Saturday was a true see-saw struggle. To the delight of the sell-out crowd, a pink-clad Canadian squad rallied from a 4-2 second-period deficit to earn a 5-4 shootout victory over the arch-rival USA. Hayley Wickenheiser scored the decisive goal.

Few team sports have been dominated so emphatically by one country as women’s hockey by Canada. Since the inception of the World Women’s Championship into the IIHF program in 1990, Team Canada won all eight championships leading up to the ninth Women’s World tournament in Sweden in 2005. Additionally, Canada had won the 2002 Olympic Gold. The only blemish to Canada’s women’s record was USA’s win in the 1998 Olympics.

Team Canada faced its toughest opponent to date as they faced Sweden on their home soil. With over 4,000 fans in the Cloetta Center to watch the host team try and knock off the eight time defending champions, it was the tournaments best atmosphere by far. Canada had the added benefit of having a couple of touring Canadian girl’s teams from Durham and Orangeville, Ontario to help cheer on the red and white.

The Canadian offence was stifled by the Russian defensive system in the first, but did manage to score one. Jayna Hefford scored from her knees as she converted on a Canadian power play for the only goal of the period.
