Bäckström Awarded Olympic Silver in Sweden

As was first reported earlier in the month, the International Olympic Committee and IIHF righted a big wrong committed at the Gold Medal Game in Sochi this past February, awarding a silver medal to Swedish forward Nicklas Bäckström, who was barred from the game just prior to puck drop over testing positive for pseudoephedrine in an allergy medication, which was later discovered to be prescribed to him, and not ingested maliciously.

Bäckström, the Washington Capitals star, was awarded the medal at a pre-game ceremony between Brynäs IF, Bäckström’s former Swedish league team, and Djurgårdens IF, at the Gavlerinken Arena in Gävle. Also present at the ceremony were Pär Mårts, head coach of Tre Kronor‘s national team, and Christer Englund, President of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and IIHF Council Member.

As previously noted, whether Bäckström’s participation in the Gold Medal Game could have reversed Sweden’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of a Canadian defensive powerhouse will never be known – however, six months after being held out of one of the biggest games of his life, Bäckström can take some solace in finally receiving his medal to share with his teammates.
