Penguins Capture Stanley Cup With IHLC Support

They may not have been able to take the title on home ice for the first time in franchise history, but the Pittsburgh Penguins capitalized on the heroics of Kris Letang and Matt Murray to capture their fourth Stanley Cup title from the San Jose Sharks in six games.

A wild, thrilling series that capped off an even wilder Stanley Cup playoffs, back-and-forth offensive talent from the likes of Conn Smythe winner Sidney Crosby, Phil Kessel, Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau, as well as the stellar goaltending of Murray and Martin Jones, set the tone for the finals. And the victory came six months to the day of the hiring of coach Mike Sullivan, who took over for a Penguins team sitting outside the playoffs before the Christmas holidays in 2015.

The series, which Pittsburgh led for all of except in Game 5, was sealed on a second period goal from Letang, that sucked the air right out of San Jose’s SAP Center just over a minute after Couture tied the game 1-1 for the Sharks. Patric Hörnqvist added an empty netter in the third to seal the victory, which in the third became yet another goalkeeping duel between Murray and Jones.

The Penguins, winning their fourth Cup and first since 2009, boast eight players and three staff members from five countries that have held the International Hockey Lineal Championship, including captain Sidney Crosby and assistant captains Chris Kunitz and Yevgeni Malkin.
