Saturday, August 6, 2016

Joel Eriksson-Ek scored the decisive shootout winning goal as Sweden topped Finland, 3-2, in the day’s earlier tilt at the 2016 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

David Bernhardt registered the game’s first goal for Sweden when his wrist shot from the left face-off dot beat Finland’s Veini Vehviläinen 3:13 into the opening period.

Finland evened the score with :36 remaining when Juuso Välimäki’s shot from the point deflected off a man in front and past Filip Gustavsson.

Julius Nättinen gave Finland a 2-1 lead just :42 into the middle stanza but Sweden capitalized 2:24 later when Lias Andersson was able to tap home his own rebound.

Both teams were unable to convert in the third period and after a scoreless five minutes of extra time, the game went to a shootout. There, Joel Eriksson-Ek netted the first and only shootout goal in the fourth round to give Sweden the victory.
