The top-tier Canadian women’s hockey league today awarded their champion, a week after the American Isobel Cup was awarded to the Minnesota Whitecaps, with the Calgary Inferno defeating the Canadiennes de Montrรฉal 5-2 in Toronto to win their second Clarkson Cup in four seasons.
The Inferno was all over Les Canadiennes in the first period, striking twice on goaltender (and former Calgary starter) Emerance Maschmeyer in the first period, with Zoe Hickel and Halli Krzyzaniak finding the back of the net in the opening 13 minutes. Ann-Sophie Bettez answered back with a pair of goals in the second, but a Brianna Decker power play marker, and Hickel’s second goal in the third period, was too much for Montrรฉal to recover from, with a Rebecca Johnston empty netter sealing the victory. Maschmeyer finished with 26 saves on 30 shots, while Calgary keeper Alex Rigsby saved 25 of 27 in the victory.
Our congratulations go out to the players, management and fans of the Calgary Inferno, with those on the roster that have also held the IHLC highlighted in bold:
