Canadian goaltender Geneviève Lacasse, whose absence from the inaugural PWHL Draft spurred speculation about her coming retirement, confirmed today she is joining the PWHL’s Ottawa front office, confirming her retirement from the game at age 34, recapping a Triple Gold-winning career with Olympic, World Championship and CWHL titles to her name.
After a collegiate career at Providence College, Lacasse made her pro debut with the CWHL’s Boston Blades in 2012, starting a seven-year CWHL career that would span three clubs (Boston, Calgary and Montréal), the league’s top goaltender honours in 2013, and a pair of Clarkson Cup titles in 2013 and 2015 with Boston. With the CWHL’s shutdown in 2019, Lacasse would spend four seasons with the PWHPA, capturing the PWHPA title in 2023, their final year of existence before the formation of the CWHL. Lacasse will now join the PWHL’s Ottawa franchise in a sales position, working alongside her wife and fellow Canadian goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer, who will occupy the starter’s net when the inaugural season kicks off in January 2024.
A native of Kingston, Ontario, Lacasse debuted for Canada at the first (and so far) only Twelve Nations Tournament in 2011, later making her major tournament debut as the third goalie with Team Canada at the 2012 World Championship, her first of five appearances, capturing her lone Gold medal despite seeing no playing time. Lacasse would capture three Silver (2013, 2015, 2017) and one Bronze (2019) in her remaining appearances, and would also capture a pair of Olympic medals in her two appearances, with Gold in 2014 (thus making her the second Triple Gold Club women’s goaltender, after Kim St-Pierre) and Silver in 2018. Lacasse would also capture a pair of Nations Cup Golds in 2013 and 2014, along with three Silver medals (2012, 2016, 2017).
Lacasse captured the IHLC nine times in her career, first coming at the Twelve Nations Tournament, with the final coming in the lead-up to the inaugural Rivalry Series in 2019. We wish Geneviève and her family the very best for her retirement and the things to come!
