Thursday, February 7, 2013

Czechia defeated Sweden to win the International Hockey Lineal Championship in the opening match of the 2013 Oddset Hockey Games in Malmö, in a 2-0 win over Tre Kronor in front of their home fans. Michal Vondkra and Jiří Novotný scored for the Czechs, and Alexander Salák stopped all 37 shots he faced for the shutout.

The win marks Czechia’s 68th reign with the International Hockey Lineal Championship, their first reign since November, when they won the IHLC from Finland in the 2012 Karjala Tournament. This was the second straight IHLC meeting between the Czechs and Swedes, as Sweden won the Channel One Cup finale in December 4-0 to retain the IHLC over the Czechs. The IHLC is on the line next in Czechia’s game against Finland on February 9.
