The National Hockey League completed its awards distribution for the 2024-25 season with the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals, with eight IHLC holders representing six countries taking home trophies handed out over the past month.
With the Conn Smythe Trophy going to Florida’s Sam Bennett, the final NHL award of the season was given out, after all other trophies were awarded starting with the Stanley Cup Conference Finals, with the winners for the Hart and Vezina shown on 12 June during a televised ceremony prior to Game 4 of the Finals.
The season’s big winner was Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who was awarded both the Hart Memorial and Vezina trophies at the awards ceremony, on top of his already clinched Jennings Trophy. Hellebuyck becomes the first goaltender since Carey Price in 2015 to win the Hart as League MVP, the first Jet to win MVP honours, and just the fourth American-born player (after Billy Burch, Patrick Kane and Auston Matthews) to win the award. While this was Hellebuyck’s first Hart Trophy, the Vezina marks his third (and second straight), and the Jennings marks his second (also second straight) wins for top goaltender and lowest goals against, respectively.
Another six players won repeat awards, with Nikita Kucherov winning his second Art Ross and Ted Lindsay trophies as top scorer and MVP voted by his peers, Alexander Barkov won his second straight (and third overall) Selke trophy, Cale Makar winning his second Norris Trophy as the league’s top defender, and Anลพe Kopitar winning his third Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly play. Former league MVPs Leon Draisaitl and Alexander Ovechkin won their first respective Richard and Messier trophies, while the other four winners marked the first individual trophies of any kind in the NHL, with Bennett, Spencer Carbery (Adams), Lane Hutson (Calder) and Sean Monahan (Masterton) rounding out the awards.
The Jim Gregory Award for GM of the year will be announced at a later date. (UPDATE 27 June: Jim Nill was announced as the winner, his third straight Jim Gregory Award).
