
Due to the myriad of changes to this year’s Euro Hockey Tour, the Euro Hockey Challenge has been impacted as well, with only two legs in this year’s competition, rather than the usual three. The participants of the Euro Hockey Tour (Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czechia) will face off against four rising European squads (Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia and Norway) in a series of two-game challenges, giving the lower ranked squads the chance to compete against the top teams in Europe.

🇫🇮 Jarkko Ruutu Retires From Jokerit

Yet another mainstay of the Leijonat has decided to hang up his skates. Following earlier retirements of Saku Koivu and Teemu Selänne, it is now power forward Jarkko Ruutu, a 12-year NHL, six year SM-liiga and Finnish national team veteran, retiring from the sport. Ruutu laced up for HIFK and Jokerit in the SM-liiga, as well as for Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Ottawa and Anaheim in the NHL.

2014 Four Nations Cup Schedule Announced

As reported by Hockey Canada, the schedule for the 2014 Four Nations Cup at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia has been announced. Canada will be looking to defend not only its Gold from the 2013 tournament in Lake Placid, New York, but also the IHLC that they captured from the United States at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The Finnish squad has been on the world stage since the beginning of international women’s hockey, first competing at the 1990 World Championship. While the Finns are one of the five nations to ever hold the women’s IHLC, and are a mainstay of the annual Four Nations Cup, they have only won four IHLC games, holding the title for a single game in each reign. However, with women’s hockey getting more competitive every day, look for the Naisleijonat to become a more dominant player on the world stage.

While the Finns have always been a major contender on the world hockey stage, they remarkably did not play for the IHLC until 1949, winning their first title in 1951. Since then, however, the Leijonat have been a consistent threat in the hockey world, amassing over 100 IHLC wins and nearly 50 reigns. Finland has finally begun to break through at major world tournaments, winning three World Championship after 50+ appearances, and their first Olympic Gold medal in 2022.

The Leijonat, who have participated in every World Junior Championship and only once have ever faced relegation, have been five-time World Champions, in 1987, 1998, 2014, 2016 and 2019, with another ten-plus Silver and Bronze victories. The team has flip flopped between perennial medal contenders and sitting near the bottom of the Top Division, but are always a continual thorn in the sides of the tournament heavy hitters, and are always looking to play spoiler.
