The schedule for the 2023 IIHF World Championship was today announced for the tournament taking place in Tampere, Finland and Rฤซga, Latvia, with the two previous Worlds hosts stepping in to replace Saint Petersburg, Russia as the hosts, who were stripped as hosts after Russia was banned from IIHF competition for their continued invasion of Ukraine.

After stripping Saint Petersburg, Russia of hosting duties for the 2023 World Championship due to their ongoing invasion in Ukraine, today the IIHF announced at their annual Congress that hosting rights would now be split between to the last two hosts of the World Championships, with 2021 hosts Rฤซga, Latvia and current 2022 hosts Tampere, Finland hosting next year, from 12-28 May 2023.

The IIHF today announced, that “out of concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans,” that the 2023 IIHF World Championship, set to take place in Saint Petersburg, Russia next May, would be moved to a different location, due to Russia’s continued and deepening of invasion of Ukraine.

The hockey world today was struck with a tragic blow as news from Latvia emerged that Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matฤซss Kivlenieks had unexpectedly passed away following a reported accidental injury at only the age of 24 in Novi, Michigan, USA.
