First Nine Nations Qualified For 2018 Olympic Men’s Tournament

Following Belarus‘ failure to finish in the top four at the 2015 World Championships, Slovakia scooped up the ninth and final automatic qualification spot for the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea, joining defending champions Canada, Finland, Sweden, Russia, the United States, Czechia, Switzerland and the host nation Korea.

🇨🇿 🇩🇪 Czechs Promoted, Germany Relegated For Women’s Worlds

As a result of their 3-0 win over Denmark, improving them to 4-0 at the Division I Group A tournament in Rouen, France, the Czech women’s team has secured the eighth and final spot at the 2016 Women’s World Championship next spring in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, taking the spot from the German squad that was relegated at this year’s Championship in Malmö, Sweden.

2015 Euro Hockey Challenge Schedule Confirmed

Due to the myriad of changes to this year’s Euro Hockey Tour, the Euro Hockey Challenge has been impacted as well, with only two legs in this year’s competition, rather than the usual three. The participants of the Euro Hockey Tour (Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czechia) will face off against four rising European squads (Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia and Norway) in a series of two-game challenges, giving the lower ranked squads the chance to compete against the top teams in Europe.

First competing as West Germany at the inaugural World Championship in 1990, the German women’s team has so far been unable to capture the IHLC in nine attempts – however, they are continuing to improve, competing for the IHLC as recently as 2009, and finishing as good as fifth in both their latest World Championship (2013) and Olympic Games (2006).

The German junior team has been a constant at the World Junior Championship since the inaugural tournament in 1977, only missing the tournament three times between 1977 and 1998. But following relegation in 1998, the Träger der Adler have been on an elevator ride to and from the Top Division in alternating years, only staying for consecutive seasons from 2013-15 and 2021-26, but are looking to become a permanent mainstay in the future.

Germany’s national hockey team, much like the country in the 20th century, has had a wild share of ups and downs – first winning the IHLC in 1909, the team suffered during years during and between both World Wars, and the division of Germany left the team’s successor, West Germany, weakened and less of a threat. While the West did manage to capture the IHLC on a few occasions, it was not until reunification that Träger der Adler has regained its footing again, with a smattering NHL stars helping Germany to win the IHLC in the modern era.
