IIHF Announces Hall Of Fame 2016 Class

The International Ice Hockey Federation announced their 2016 Hall Of Fame class, to be inducted during the 2016 World Championships in Russia. The class includes five players and two coaches from six different countries, including two posthumous inductions, that have held a myriad of World Championship, Olympic and World Cup medals, along with a number of International Hockey Lineal Championship titles.

2016 World Championship Schedule Released

The IIHF has released the full schedule for the 2016 World Championship in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Russia, with defending champs Canada opening the tournament against their cross-border rivals the United States, while Russia aims to avenge its Silver medal finish by opening against their historical rivals Czechia.

After Poland failed to defeat Hungary in regulation in front of their hometown fans, Hungary clinched the second and final promotion to the 2016 World Championships in Russia, following an undefeated Kazakhstan who punched their ticket on Thursday.

IHLC last held 30 March 2007

First playing for the IHLC in 1933, Hungary began to build momentum before the Cold War relegated the team back into relative obscurity, seemingly only playing as a punching bag for the more powerful likes of the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia to practice on. However, the Maygars stunned the hockey world by taking the IHLC from Sweden in March 2007, before losing it the next day back to Tre Kronor, leaving Hungary tied for the shortest total IHLC reign in history. However, Hungary continues to improve, and will surely look to improve on and increase their tiny IHLC record.

First competing nationally in 1999, the Magyars have rocketed up the women’s world rankings in the past two decades, climbing from Division III all the way to the Top Division in 2019, competing for their first IHLC by becoming surprising quarterfinalists at the 2022 Women’s World Championships.
