The Canadian women’s hockey team continues to score goals in bunches, showing defiance in the face of critics who have accused the defending Olympic champions of running up the score.

Canada scored in double digits for the third straight game Wednesday after a 13-1 thrashing of Sweden, the Silver medallist from the 2006 Turin Games. With the win, Canada finished on top of the Group A preliminary round standings.

Prior to Monday’s 10-1 win over Switzerland to secure a semifinal berth in the Olympic tournament, the Canadians had received emails calling them “classless” and “disrespectful” for their 18-0 victory over Slovakia to open the tournament Saturday.

When the lopsided affair mercifully ended on Saturday night, Canada had opened the 2010 Games with a record 18-0 victory, led by veteran Jayna Hefford’s three goals and three assists.

The Americans won the Hockey Canada Cup with a 2-1 win over Canada at GM Place, which will be called Canada Hockey Place for the Olympics next February.

Jenny Potter scored a pair of goals, her second short-handed, as the United States beat Canada 4-2 Thursday at the Hockey Canada Cup women’s tournament. Potter’s second goal put the Americans up 2-0 early in the third.
