First Five Nations Qualify For 2018 Olympic Women’s Tournament

As a result of Switzerland’s stumble out of Group B and into the relegation round at the ongoing World Championships, Russia and Sweden locked up the final two spots available to qualify automatically for the women’s tournament at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea. They join Canada, the United States, Finland and hosts Korea, with the final two spots to be gained in a qualification tournament ending in February 2017.

First Nine Nations Qualified For 2018 Olympic Men’s Tournament

After months of speculation and deliberation over whether the host nation of the 2018 Olympics, Korea, would be granted automatic berths in the games for ice hockey, the IIHF today announced at their IIHF Congress meeting that both the Korean men’s and women’s teams would gain berthsย to the Games. As reported by the IIHF, the decision was made to increase investment to Korea’s hockey program in the three-plusย years leading up to the games to ensure that the Koreans field competitive teams in 2018.
