NHL Withdraws From 2022 Olympics Due To COVID Postponements


After having to cancel fifty games in the past week over protocols due to the new Omicron COVID-19 variant, the National Hockey League today officially announced that due to the material impact of these postponements on the 2021-22 season, they will be withdrawing their players from participating in the upcoming 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.

With just over two weeks before the IIHF Women’s World Championship was set to begin in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, following a year delay, the IIHF today announced the tournament in Nova Scotia would be cancelled after failing to reach an agreement with federal and provincial government health authorities. The IIHF will instead look to reschedule the tournament for later in the summer of 2021 at an alternate location.

At a ruling today at the Court Of Arbitration For Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, Russia’s proposed four year sporting ban from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was reduced to two years, meaning that Russia will be banned from participating in any international sporting competition, including the 2021 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics, until 17 December 2022.
