The Czech Republic won its first IIHF World Championship as a new nationย in 1996. This started an era of unprecedented success in Czech hockey history. The 1996 gold medal game against Canada was decided after Martin Prochรกzka scored the winner with 19 seconds left to play of a 4-2 victory. Two years later, the Dominik Haลกek-led Czechs won their first Olympic gold after the Dominator stunned all five Canadian shooters in a shootout in the semi-final and blanked Russiaย 1-0 in the final.

To fully understand the impact of Slovakiaโ€™s first World Championship gold medal in hockey, we need to rewind. The dissolution of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993, meant that the Czech Ice Hockey Association took over the position of former Czechoslovakia while Slovakia was considered a “new” hockey nation. As a result, the Slovaks had to start from scratch in the IIHF World Championship program and work their way up through the divisions.
