
Just days after the death of Ján Starší, who built the Czechoslovak national team into a dominant force in the 1970’s, the man who helped carry the Czechoslovakian team through the 1980’s and Czech team in the 1990’s has also passed away, as Luděk Bukač today died at the age of 83.

The Czech Republic won its first IIHF World Championship as a new nation in 1996. This started an era of unprecedented success in Czech hockey history. The 1996 gold medal game against Canada was decided after Martin Procházka scored the winner with 19 seconds left to play of a 4-2 victory. Two years later, the Dominik Hašek-led Czechs won their first Olympic gold after the Dominator stunned all five Canadian shooters in a shootout in the semi-final and blanked Russia 1-0 in the final.

To fully understand the impact of Slovakia’s first World Championship gold medal in hockey, we need to rewind. The dissolution of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993, meant that the Czech Ice Hockey Association took over the position of former Czechoslovakia while Slovakia was considered a “new” hockey nation. As a result, the Slovaks had to start from scratch in the IIHF World Championship program and work their way up through the divisions.
