Each season, the IIHF holds their annual top division championship, one of the most prestigious international hockey tournaments at all levels – the IIHF World Championship. In almost every instance since its inception in 1930, the International Hockey Lineal Championship is contended for, most often being unified by the World Champions with the tournament Gold Medal. Below is the history behind each World Championship (men’s, women’s and junior) since 1930, and the IHLC championship lineage through each tournament.
IIHF Men’s World Championship (1930-)
Founded in 1930 with an 11-team elimination tournament to face Canada for the inaugural Gold Medal (as Canada was defending 3-time Olympic Gold medalists), the World Championship evolved into a Group Tournament in 1931-39, where winners from top groups would meet in a medal group, playing a round robin to crown champions. Following World War II, the format was changed to a full round robin, where all teams would face each other in the tournament, with the top 3 ranked teams at the end of the round robin were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze, respectively. This format lasted until 1992, where the current format, a group play stage followed by an elimination medal round, was adopted. No World Championship were held in Olympic years between 1920-68, as the Olympic Gold winners were also considered to be World Champions for that year.

IIHF Women’s World Championship (1990-)
Established following the success of the 1987 Women’s World Tournament, an official IIHF World Championship was introduced for women’s hockey in 1990, following a similar format adopted by the men’s tournament in 1992, featuring a group play stage followed by an elimination medal round. Since the tournament’s inception, every Gold Medal Game has been contested between Canada and the United States, with the U.S. winning their first ever Gold in 2005. Since the World Championship became an annual tournament in 1997, no World Championship tournaments are held in Olympic years, as the Olympic Gold winners are also considered to be World Champions for that year.

IIHF World Junior Championship (1977-)
Starting originally as a demonstration tournament, the official under-20 World Junior Championship was started in 1977, where many players in junior leagues throughout the world who may not have received professional consideration otherwise were given the chance to shine on a global stage. Free from hindrances of being interfered with by professional leagues or the Winter Olympics, the World Juniors have since become a late December tradition around the world, and the first opportunity for many to see the game’s newest stars for the first time. Following suit with their senior counterparts, the World Junior Championship changed to an elimination medal round format in 1997.
